Honouring lives lost – Sydney Homeless Memorial Service 2025

By June 27, 2025No Comments

On Saturday, 21 June – the longest night of the year – the Martin Place Amphitheatre became a space of solemn reflection and shared humanity as the Sydney community gathered for the annual Homeless Persons’ Memorial Service.

Held each winter solstice, the service offers a moment to pause and remember those who have died while experiencing homelessness. Many of these individuals passed without formal recognition or farewell. This gathering ensures they are not forgotten – their lives honoured with dignity, compassion, and remembrance.

The evening began with a moving prayer led by Bishop Danny Meagher, who called on attendees to reflect on the inherent value of every life and our shared responsibility to care for one another. His words were a powerful reminder that dignity in death begins with dignity in life.

The Sydney Street Choir gave a stirring performance, their songs adding warmth and emotion to a night marked by cold weather but deep community spirit.

Personal testimonies shared during the service gave voice to those no longer with us. These stories – often untold – reminded us that behind every statistic is a person with hopes, struggles, relationships, and a story worth remembering.

The service concluded with warm conversation, hot drinks, and the compassionate presence of the Vinnies Van, continuing the tradition of care and connection that defines this event.

A show of community solidarity

This year’s memorial was also a powerful expression of community solidarity, made possible through the generous support and presence of many dedicated organisations.

We acknowledge and thank the PAYCE Foundation, Vinnies, the Sydney Street Choir, Honeybees Choir, Grief Care, Jewish House, the Justice and Peace Office, David’s Place and The End Street Sleeping Collaboration for their contributions to this deeply meaningful event. Their involvement not only supported the evening itself but also reaffirmed a shared commitment to ensuring that no one is forgotten – in life or in death.

A call to compassion

The Homeless Persons’ Memorial Service is a reminder of the value of every person, regardless of circumstance. It calls us to reflect on the systems and choices that lead to homelessness – and the ways we can respond with empathy, action, and advocacy.

As we move through winter, may we carry forward the spirit of the service – to see, support, and stand with those experiencing homelessness – and to ensure that, in life and in death, every person is treated with the dignity they deserve.
