ABC News has reported today on an independent inquiry into Rookwood Cemetery, after concerns from some community groups about issues such as pricing and governance. This inquiry is in relation to Rookwood General Cemeteries Reserve Trust (RGCRT), which was formed in 2013 through the merger of five Crown trusts – Rookwood General, Anglican, Independent, Jewish and Muslim Cemetery Trusts.
The RGCRT is a completely separate entity to the Catholic Metropolitan Cemetery Trust (CMCT) which also operates from the grounds of Rookwood Cemetery, managing the Catholic section. The RGCRT and CMCT operate under different boards, management and staff and have no association in terms of their operations and business practices. The CMCT’s governance processes are leading edge. The CMCT has developed strong governance frameworks consistent with the highest industry standards.
