On 10 January 2025, Rookwood Catholic Cemetery had the honour of hosting the unveiling of a memorial stone dedicated to the Hungarian community, a tribute to the many distinguished figures who contributed immensely to the community’s development in Sydney. This significant event was attended by high-ranking officials from Hungary, as well as local leaders and members of the Hungarian community.
The memorial stone, which marks the resting place of many Hungarian émigrés, serves as a symbol for those who, despite their extraordinary contributions, were never memorialised with headstones. The stone honours the legacy of individuals who found themselves in Australia after World War II, stripped of their titles, professions, and identities. While they arrived as labourers in a foreign land, they tirelessly worked to restore Hungarian culture and build strong community ties, founding institutions that continue to benefit generations today.
Among the key figures memorialised is Endre Csapó, a pivotal leader in the early Hungarian community who fought to raise awareness in Western political circles about the true nature of communism. Through his editorials and advocacy, Csapó became a voice for the Hungarian diaspora, championing the notion that “The Nation is One,” regardless of citizenship.
The unveiling ceremony included heartfelt speeches and a moment of reflection.
