The construction of Macarthur Memorial Park in south-west Sydney will deliver world class memorial facilities and parkland available to everyone in the community. It will provide burial capacity for Sydney’s rapidly growing and diverse multi-cultural population, with some religious groups due to run out of space in just 2-3 years.
In December 2023, Paynter Dixon completed works included pouring of the multi-faith chapel ground floor tension slab, construction of the concrete walls for the administration building and construction of concrete ground floor slabs to the gatehouse, café, and function centre buildings. The plant and maintenance building has progressed rapidly with services fit out, joinery, tiling and floor installation.
The following site work was also undertaken; preparation of ground in the riparian zones and dams and installation of jute matting and mulch ready for planting, stabilisation of historic coach house building started under the supervision of a structural engineer and heritage consultant, placement of recycled garden soil behind kerbs and road verges including the application of 20,000sqm of hydro mulch and the continuation of bush regeneration and weed control.
The blueprint for the sustainable memorial park, adopts the successful overseas model where cemeteries are utilised by the public as beautiful open space and used for recreational purposes. The burial plots will be discreetly positioned inside landscaped burial rooms, where the interment practices and beliefs of all cultural and religious groups are respected. The major building works are due to be completed by the end of 2024, with the memorial park opening in early 2025.
