Every person deserves to be remembered. Every life deserves to be honoured. And no one should make their final journey alone.
These beliefs were the heart of the Bringing Them Home Service held on Tuesday 4 August 2026 at the Charles O’Neill Walkway Gardens in Rookwood Catholic Cemetery.
More than an annual memorial and interment service, it was a deeply meaningful expression of community – bringing people together to ensure that those who may otherwise leave this life without family or financial means, were farewelled with the dignity, compassion and respect that every person deserves.
This year, we gathered to honour and lay to rest three people – Brenda, Paul and Robert. Pastoral leaders, community organisations, volunteers, students and staff stood together as a community around them – bearing witness to their lives and affirming through their presence that they mattered, they belonged, and they would not be forgotten. Bishop Terry Brady presided over the service, assisted by Father Tibe Abza Wolde.
There was a genuine spirit of generosity, compassion and care from everyone involved – before, during and after the event. Every contribution – from preparing the memorial space and the beautiful music, to welcoming guests, providing hospitality, participating in the service, and quietly being present for those who were grieving – helped create a farewell filled with warmth and dignity.
That same spirit was reflected by our community partners, including St Vincent de Paul NSW, Vinnies Van Services, David’s Place, St Vincent’s Healthcare, the Brown Nurses and Matthew Talbot Homeless Hostel. Their presence, together with the participation of students from St Vincent’s College Ashfield and Domremy College Five Dock, was a powerful reminder that compassionate community is something we create together.
Grief Care were privileged to provide a welcoming and inclusive space for the service, including pastoral support and presence throughout the day – available to accompany those attending and recognising that this service deeply touches people’s own experiences of grief, loss and remembrance.
The significance of Bringing Them Home lies in what happens at the graveside, but also in who chooses to stand there. For the three people laid to rest that day, a community stood with them. They were surrounded by prayer, kindness and human presence. Their lives were acknowledged with the assurance that their life mattered, they belonged, and they were remembered.
Catholic Cemeteries + Crematoria is grateful to everyone who was part of this special day. The compassion and care shown by all involved embodied our shared values of faith, compassion, respect and collaboration and demonstrated what is possible when a community comes together to ensure that every life is honoured forever.
