Catholic Cemeteries + Crematoria CEO Lauren Hardgrove has achieved remarkable milestones just 12 months into the role, continuing to build on the legacy of former CEO Peter O’Meara, one year after his passing.

In February, under Lauren’s leadership, the NSW Court of Appeal reaffirmed the Catholic Metropolitan Cemeteries Trust (CMCT) as a charitable organisation, upholding its charitable purpose to bury the dead of the Roman Catholic Church.

On June 6, 2024, in a significant achievement for Lauren and her team, Minister for Lands and Property, Steve Kamper, introduced a new bill to the NSW parliament to expand CMCT’s purpose.

This crucial legislation is required before the July 1 deadline for implementing NSW’s new cemetery provisions. Kamper stated, “As a modern Crown cemetery operator, CMCT manages its cemeteries as a portfolio and for the benefit of all people in need of burial services. It is critical that CMCT’s successor is empowered to continue to do so.”

Another major milestone will be reached on July 1, when CMCT will be statutorily transferred to the newly formed Catholic Cemeteries and Crematoria Trust. This transition will enable the Trust to continue its charitable work of providing burial and cremation services to people of all faiths and beliefs, while continuing to trade under Catholic Cemeteries + Crematoria name.

All this is achieved is achieved while administering the development of Sydney’s first new Crown Cemetery in 80 years, Macarthur Memorial Park, due to open in April 2025.

Lauren’s leadership in turbulent times demonstrates her dedication and ability to effect the change required to preserve the values and mission of Catholic Cemeteries + Crematoria.
